Calicut (Kozhikode) is again playing host to the International Book Fest being conducted under the auspices of the State Institute of Language from December 8-15, 2009. There are umpteen reasons why Calicut can be a perennial venue for a well-received cultural event like an International book festival. The city, the pride of Malabar (North Kerala), is historically important as the capital of the erstwhile Samoothiri Kings (Zamorins). It is not just ‘history’ that made Kozhikode.Calicut is also blessed with legions of book readers whose number keeps growing despite certain prophets of doom predicting the end of the book reading culture against the backdrop of an inescapable invasion of the electronic media. This book reading public invariably includes a lot of writers and scholars as well.

ABOUT KERALA LANGUAGE INSTITUTE
The Kerala State Institute of Language was set up in 1968 under the Department of Culture, Govt. of Kerala, with aim of bringing out text books suitable for students at University level as well as books meant for extra reading. Its founder director was none other than Dr N V Krishna Warrier—the multifaceted man of letters and scholar-poet. Up till now, the Institute has published more than 2600 titles on subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, Technology, Social Science, Language, Literature and Culture etc. On top of that, as an express project to make Malayalam capable of meeting the challenges thrown up by modern research and knowledge areas, it has brought out 16 subject-wise glossaries in addition to a variety of dictionaries to cater to the needs of the student community.
